Aphonopelma chalcodes
Theraphosidae
 |
| Aphonopelma chalcodes is a common species in SW USA,
frequently found in burrows with a filmy silk plug made with exceedingly
fine silk. Females are nocturnal and generally stay close to their burrows
when they come out at night. Males may be found on roads in large numbers in
the monsoon season (July-August) when they abandon their burrows to search
for females. Very little is known about their venom.
In general, these spiders are not aggressive and it is difficult to get them
to bite. Bites are not serious and generally not painful, except for actual
bite. |
