Family Agelenidae

Typical funnelweb weavers

Order Araneae

Callilena spp. with camouflaged egg sac to left

Calilena spp. with camouflaged egg sac

Introduction

Agelenids are typical funnelweb spiders, which should not be confused with the infamous Sydney funnel web spider (Atrax robustus) and relatives from Australia.

Most agelenids build a sheet web that extends from a tubular retreat, which might be hidden in a curled leaf, leaf litter, clumps or grass or an abandoned rodent burrow.

Species

Very few venoms have been explored from this family, even though it is very diverse and the spiders tend to be very accessible in most parts of the world.

We currently have:

Agelenopsis aperta venom has been explored extensively, resulting in the discovery of many polyamine and peptide toxins with diverse and frequently very useful activities.

Tegenaria agrestis, commonly called the Hobo spider in the US and may be responsible for some inflammatory or dermonecrotic bites.

Calilena spp. (seasonal)

Hololena spp. (seasonal)
