Agelenidae
Typical funnelweb weavers
Agelenopsis aperta at entrance of retreat |
|
Agelenids build
suspended sheet webs extending from a tubular retreat, similar to a funnel
in some respects. The retreat typically extends into a leaf litter, curled
leaves, rodent burrows, spaces under rocks or almost any kind of protected
crevice and is open at the opposite end, a back door for escapes.

The sheet
extends over surrounding surfaces and acts as a racetrack for the spiders.
Insects accidentally jump or fall on to the sheet or are knocked into the
web by a superstructure of triplines above the web. The spider detects the
tugs and vibrations and rushes our to grab the insect. |
