In the Media

Several discoveries or new applications for our venoms have it into the popular media. Some of these include:

  1. A painkiller from Grammostola spatulata by Rick Lampe at Astra-Zeneca
  2. A stretch-activated ion channel blocker from the same venom by Fred Sachs at SUNY. Sachs used this toxin to characterize a new way to block atrial fibrillation, a leading cause of death from heart attacks.
  3. Rod Mackinnon received a Nobel prize for his group's determination the 3D structure of a potassium channel. We had no role in this work, but were able to help by supplying Grammostola venom. Mackinnon's group also discovered and got a 3D structure of hanatoxin, another toxin from Grammostola venom,

Spider Pharm has also had more than it's share of media attention.
