Spiders for
Education
|
|
We're having a lot
of fun developing educational projects and hope that you will get just as
much using, adapting and even improving on them.
Our focus is on development of resources for using common
house spiders in education, using spiders similar or identical to ones found
around homes in many parts of the United States. The goal is promote an
understanding and appreciation of this amazing group of animals while
helping to build critical thinking and scientific skills. |
|
|
We like to
encourage an emphasis on common, local spiders or ones similar to those
found in your area. What is learned from these spiders can be challenged by
observations on spiders under more natural conditions, and vice-versa, while
promoting more awareness and interest in local talent. |
Scorpions
|
Live,
non-hazardous species and preserved specimens. |
Centipedes
|
These should be
available later this year (2007). We are breeding the common Scolopendra
polymorpha for research and educational use. |
Preserved Specimens
|
Preserved
specimens are useful for teaching and learning anatomy, especially when you
can also watch and work with live ones.
Our specimens are
preserved in non-toxic, non-flammable and nearly odorless glycerin-based
formulations. |
Lesson Plans
|
Numerous lesson
plans using spiders and other arachnids are in development. |
|
|
This is a simple
list of ideas for the moment. More material will be available as we get
caught up. |

People should
learn how to recognize hazardous spiders and scorpions and know what do if
they think that have bitten, though the most important reasons might
surprise you.
Hazardous species may also be useful for introducing and
practicing scientific methods as well as diverse biological topics. There is
a lot of low-lying fruit in easy reach for picking, to challenge and
discussions can include diverse topics in behavior, adaptive biology,
physiology, biochemistry, neurobiology and clinical medicine, to mention a
few. |
